Synopsis: Morten Andersen’s Satyricon & Munch is a perfect example of the collaborative capacity between music and the photobook. The collaboration between black metal heavyweights Satyricon, Andersen, and the Munchmuseet exemplifies a rare chance to see three dominant egos (even if posthumous) work in tandem to produce documentation of Satyricon’s invitation to create music based on Munch’s paintings, etchings, and drawings at the museum. In many ways, Andersen dissects the process without ever losing his own vision. It does not feel like a simple commission, but a solid and in-depth revelation that courts all parties, induing Andersen with equal opportunity and aplomb.
