If you are a fan of Thai psychedelic music from the 60’s the design of this book alone will be enough for you. It is superbly designed and pays much homage to the quality of design on album covers, erotic manuals, and other cultural ephemera from the period. The design quality will almost shamefully be wasted on it’s intended market: the photobook fetishist. Photography promotes such an insular and unenlightened crowd at times that I cringe at the thought of this book being read only for the photographic nude collages inside. It is way more than this. Tiane Doan Na Champassak is half-Thai and I can only surmise that this is the good design half. His work generally caters to the erotic, but begs more questions of transgender representation, sexual economy and the gaze….ohhhhh the GAZE. This book is a perfect synthesis for his love of his heritage and his quests in photographic matters and it is dutifully published to the highest standard by RVB Books. I own all of Tiane’s books barring two, which I will get eventually. I feel hard pressed to name another photographer these days working with such bravado consistently. The book is also “written” in Thai, which I can’t read in terms of words, but it is possibly one of the most beautiful languages to look at outside of Arabic or Georgian. It adds another layer to Tiane’s collages. The collages themselves are a bit of a poke in the eye for western consumerism, which I allude to in the article above which is also translated (probably poorly) by GARGLEBOT translator. This is by far my favorite RVB book to date and competing highly on my Tiane shelf with Sunless by Editions Du Lic. Overly RECOMMENDED.
