A master of American street photography, Leon Levinstein (American, 1910–1988) is known for his stark and vertically oriented black-and-white photographs made in New York City neighborhoods from Times Square and the Lower East Side to Coney Island. Bold and bluntly framed, the images are enthused with a voyeuristic atmosphere and an emphasis on body shapes that at times seem to hint at the grotesque.
